KARACHI, July 2: Development works have started for supply of water to katchi abadis in the limits of Gulberg Town and Shafiq and Moosa colonies will be supplied water within three days in the first stage.

This was stated by the Water Board officials in a meeting of City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, with the Nazims, Naib Nazims and councillors of union councils and town of Gulberg.

The Nazim Gulberg Town, Farooq Naimatullah and Managing Director KWSB, Brig. Behram Khan were also present.

The meeting was informed that there are not much water and sewerage problems in 8 UCs of Gulberg Town. However, the staff of KWSB is extending all cooperation.

It was stated that work on replacement of sewerage lines from Karimabad to Liaquatabad and to Sohrab Goth is in progress under Khushhal Pakistan Programme while work on repair of leakages in water lines in Federal B. Area is being carried out at a cost of Rs 3.8 million.

The meeting was informed that the cleaning of water and sewerage lines within the Town’s jurisdiction will be completed in three months.

Speaking on the occasion, the City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan said it is a matter of delight that close liaison is developing between elected representatives and officials and as a result the problems are decreasing.

He said that government organisations are being activated. However, a culture of tax payment will have to be created among the people because no organization can work without availability of funds nor they can survive.

Naimatullah Khan pointed out that the KWSB was in a debt of Rs 12 billion while it has also to pay mark-up on it. In such a situation, the citizens will have to pay the tax or else the KWSB will not be able to perform its responsibilities.

He said work on solving the water and sewerage problems in katchi abadis had been started on priority basis. He said the residents of katchi abadis, too, should first pay the tax so as to ensure speeding up of development works.

The city Nazim said it is the desire of city government to see that pace of development in katchi abadis is accelerated and this would be visible during the next few months. But there would be no leniency shown as far as the question of tax payment is concerned.—APP
