GUJRANWALA, June 24: Eight building contractors of the city tehsil council were blacklisted and dozens of others were issued show-cause notices on the charge of slow pace of construction work of uplift projects.

This was stated by the tehsil municipal officer during the city council meeting here on Monday in response to the concern voiced over the issue by members of treasury and opposition groups.

The meeting was presided over by city Naib Nazim Ehsanullah Chaudhry while city Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad and all Naib Nazimeen and councillors were also present on the occasion.

All ongoing uplift projects, the meeting apprehended, would suffer badly during the monsoon if these were not completed within the stipulated period.

It was also decided unanimously that a health centre would be established on the GT Road for the provision of medical facilities to those who sustained injuries in road accidents. Each union council would provide funds for medicines, equipments and other necessary items, it said.

Naib Nazim Haji Muhammad Afzal opposed the proposal and demanded that funds should be allocated either for upgrading the civil hospital or reopening all closed dispensaries of the city council in various parts of the city.

PO ARRESTED: A proclaimed offender and killer of two persons was arrested on Monday by Ghakkhar police after an encounter on the Nat Kalan Road.

On a tip-off that PO Ali Sher was on his way to Nat Kalan village by a motorcycle, police set up a picket there. As the PO reached there, police signalled him to stop, but he opened fire on them. Luckily, no one hurt and the police arrested him after a brief exchange of fire. Police also recovered illicit arms from his possession.

A case has been registered against him.

Ali Sher had killed Muhammad Nazir and Irshad Ahmad, the father and brother of criminal Basharat alias Basharti of Sherpur village, Ahmad Nagar, some two years ago. He also set on fire their houses to settle an old score. Basharati, who raped an FA student of the same village, had already been killed by the Ahmad Nagar police in an ‘encounter’.

COMPUTER SECTION: Former interior secretary Akram Zaki inaugurated the computer section in the bar room of the local district bar association here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, district bar president Mian Maqsood Ahmad said all records of the bar would be computerized to check anomalies and corruption.

CHALLAN TICKETS: At least 2,545 public vehicles were issued challan tickets besides impounding 671 vehicles and taking into custody 642 drivers for violating traffic rules during a week in and around the city.

Traffic DSP Intisar Hussain Jaffari said on Monday that Rs0.5 million collectively were fined to vehicle owners. Several traffic policemen involved in corruption charges were issued show-cause notices, he added.

22 POS HELD: The district police claim arresting 22 proclaimed offenders, 23 court fugitives and half a dozen history sheeters during a four-hour general hold-up here on Monday.

Police also recovered a huge quantity of illicit arms from their possession.

SSP Muhammad Aslam Tarin said 18 cases of illicit arms were registered against the criminals after seizing 13 pistols, three revolvers, a 12 bore gun, 200 cartridges and seizable narcotics from their possession.

STABBED: A man was stabbed to death while two others were injured on Monday by their rivals over relations at Kot Ladha village.

Muhammad Mansha was sitting in the compound of his house along with other family members when Yaqoob, Yousaf Zahid, Ghulam Mustafa and Nawaz came there. The intruders attacked him with knives, killing him instantly. Muhammad Boota and Amin sustained injuries when they tried to save Mansha. They were rushed to the local civil hospital in critical condition.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.

REJECTED: An ASI was sent to jail after the rejection of his bail application by the anti-corruption court here on Monday.

Muhammad Akram, involved in an embezzlement case, got an interim bail from a local court after the registration of a criminal case against him.
