NEW DELHI, June 21: The Indian foreign immigration office on Friday pulled up Time magazine journalist Alex Perry for apparently possessing two British passports, days after he wrote an article questioning the prime minister’s ability to lead a nuclear-armed nation.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao denied Perry was being harassed for his article headlined “Asleep at the Wheel?” where he raised questions about Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s state of health.
“There has been no harassment whatsoever. I refuse to be drawn into making connections,” Rao told a regular press briefing.
She added that the Indian government was “fully aware of procedures governing travel documents” and would not breach the law to harass a foreign journalist.
Delhi-based Time magazine reporter Perry appeared before immigration officials in the Foreigners Regional Registration Office for allegedly possessing two British passports.
“I don’t have anything to say,” Perry said after being questioned for 90-minutes. by immigration officials.—AFP
