PESHAWAR, June 14: The Customs Intelligence, Peshawar, seized 1031 kg of foreign-made fine quality of hashish from a government vehicle after exchange of fire with the drug smugglers wearing Frontier Constabulary uniform on Grand Trunk Road near Chamkani here, on Thursday early morning.
Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence, Saeed Akram, told Dawn that he received an information from the head office in Islamabad about the large quantity of drug-smuggling attempt.
The Customs Intelligence formed a squad, which erected barricades on Ring Road and began checking vehicles. When the squad signalled a vehicle bearing government number plate (ID-548) and police hooter at 5am on Thursday morning. On this, the driver wearing a FC uniform, accelerated the speed and turned the van to GT Road.
The Customs squad chased the vehicle, but the smugglers opened fire and later escaped leaving the van on roadside.
During the checking 1031 kg of fine quality of hashish was found. Its value has been estimated at Rs10 million.
