Death sentence to 5 juveniles commuted

Published June 13, 2002

SAHIWAL, June 12: Death penalties of five condemned juveniles have been commuted on the orders of the president.

The president had on March 23 ordered remission in the term of the prisoners but the federal interior ministry and the Punjab home department delayed the orders for three months.

The juveniles whose punishment was commuted to life term are: Mushtaq, Shahzad, Arshad, Amanat and Asghar.

No authority is, however competent, to commute the capital punishment awarded under Qisas and Diyat Ordinance. Only the relatives can grant amnesty.
