ISLAMABAD, May 2: The Election Commission on Thursday invited the political parties to send written suggestions for “holding of transparent elections.”
“The commission will make every conceivable effort to ensure that the results of the forthcoming elections reflect the wishes of the people,” the Election Commission said on Thursday.
It said that the main concern of the EC now was to ensure “a purely transparent electoral process for the forthcoming October elections.”
The EC meeting, presided over by the chief election commissioner, chief justice (retd) Irshad Hasan Khan, was attended by all the four members and the secretary Election Commission.
The EC said it was now devoting full attention to holding of general elections in October 2002, and said that written proposals from political parties and others for holding transparent elections would be welcomed.
The EC said that it still had to dispose of petitions challenging delimitation of constituencies, finalize electoral rolls, etc.
The EC said: “It would act with neutrality, impartiality, objectivity and independence at every stage of the electoral process.”
The EC said that the delimitation of the constituencies was made keeping in view the principle that the constituencies shall be delimited having regard to the geographically compact areas, existing boundaries of administrative units, facilities of communication, and public convenience.
The EC further noted that it had received a total of 945 representations against the preliminary delimitation out of which 307 pertained to national assembly and 638 to provincial assemblies. No further representation would be entertained now, it was announced.
The EC, after giving public notice, would dispose of the representations by making amendment, alterations or modifications, if required.
The representations against the preliminary delimitations would be heard and decided at the provincial capitals.
It was announced that representation would be heard on May 20, and exact date and places of hearing in respect of districts/provinces would be announced through electronic and print media. The exact dates for hearing of representation against delimitation would be announced on May 6, 2002.
No individual notices would be served on the persons making representations with reference to the preliminary list of constituencies.
