12 tribes to boycott LB polls

KALAYA, March 9: A local Jirga comprising elders of some 12 tribes of Orakzi Agency here on Saturday rejected the government’s reform agenda and decided to boycott the local government elections scheduled to be held in the agency later this year.

It was also decided that action would be taken against those tribesmen according to the tribal traditions who violated the Jirga decision, sources said.

The Jirga, attended by hundreds of people of the 12 tribes, decided that a fine of Rs 10 million would be imposed on any tribesman who participated in the local government elections, the sources added.

Besides, the Jirga decided that 10 houses of the tribe whose members violated the decisions would be burnt, according to the sources.

The Jirga also gave a deadline to all criminals and anti-social elements hiding in the Agency to leave the area before 15th otherwise they would be handed over to the political authorities, reports our correspondent.
