BAHAWALPUR, Jan 23: Opposition members staged a walkout from the district council meeting on Wednesday.

Led by its leader Sajjad Husain Pirzada, they walked out of the house in protest against non-acceptance of their demand for the allocation of development funds for their union councils.

Talking to newsmen outside the Rashadia Hall, Mr Pirzada complained that the district Nazim had said he would himself undertake projects in their UCs.

He said all 23 opposition members would also boycott Thursday’s meting if their demands were not accepted.

After the adjournment of the meeting, district Nazim Tariq Cheema told Dawn that some of the members wanted to thrust their decision on the majority of the house which could neither be allowed nor accepted.

Meanwhile, the district council was told that Rs55 million of Rs132 million under Khushal Pakistan Programme would be spent on the uplift projects this year in Bahawalpur district.

Of this amount Rs28 million have been earmarked for Bahawalpur tehsil, Rs10 million for Ahmadpur East, Rs8 million for Hasilpur, Rs5 million for Yazman, and Rs4 million for Khairpur Tamewali.

A sum of Rs77 million would be equally distributed among 77 union councils of the district.

The meeting will be held on Thursday.
