KARACHI: Power failure hits water supply

KARACHI, Nov 8: Many city area faced water shortage on Thursday owing to a major power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station.

A KWSB spokesman said power supply which went off at the Dhabeji’s Feeder No 3 at 12.30pm on Thursday was not restored till 7 pm on Thursday.

Water supply from Dhabeji’s phase-4 pumping station came to a halt at 12.30 pm on Thursday following a power breakdown at Feeder No 3, he said, adding since pumping from Dhabeji’s 4th Phase pumping station remained suspended from 12.30 pm on Thursday, the city suffered a shortfall of 28 mgd till 7pm.

He apprehended that if power supply was not restored at the affected feeder, the shortfall will continue to increase at the rate of four mgd per hour and hence it would affect the water supply position in some areas on Friday.

Asked about the impact of the short supply of water, the spokesman said some parts of the city will experience an acute water shortage on Friday as the city had already suffered a shortage of 28mgd till 7 pm on Thursday.

However, some independent sources said if power supply was not restored immediately at the Dhabeji’s Feeder No 3, it will affect the water supply in a number of localities as the city is supplied 350 mgd from 12 pumps of Dhabeji.

“Some areas will either go completely dry or will receive scant supply on Friday in the wake of power failure at the Dhabeji’s Feeder No 3,” they added.
