KARACHI: Ibad reviews uplift projects

KARACHI, Feb 8: The Sindh governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, on Tuesday called for preparation of a master plan for land up to 300 yards on both sides of the Northern Bypass.

He directed that a special vigilance team be constituted under the city government to protect this land from encroachment and unauthorised occupation, adding that people should also be kept aware not to enter into illegal purchase or sale activity of such land.

He was chairing a high-level meeting held at the Governor House to review ongoing development works under the Taameer-i-Karachi programme on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by the provincial planning minister, Shoaib Bukhari, City Nazim Niamatullah Khan, Chief Secretary Aslam Sanjrani, Principal Secretary Brig (Retd) Akhtar Zamin, Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan, DCO Fazlur Rehman and others.

Ibad, on the occasion, issued directives for allocation of area for sand extraction and early start of work on reconstruction of University Road and underpasses.

The governor stressed that quality be strictly observed in the construction of roads besides special care be taken of sewerage on roads and flyovers.

It was directed that a plan for the underpass at the point of road linking Madinat-ul-Hikmat with the Northern Bypass be immediately chalked. Besides, instructions were given for accelerating work on the shifting of grain, auto parts, iron and timber markets, as well as, the truck stand.

The Karachi Port Trust, it was said, had undertaken the construction of underpasses at PIDC House, Shaheen Complex, near Mehran Hotel on the Sharea Faisal, and on the Mahmoodabad Road. Feasibilities of the projects had already been carried out by the KPT and work was expected to start soon, it was informed.

It was mentioned in the meeting that the federal departments would implement various development projects costing Rs12 billion under the Taameer-i-Karachi programme.

The DCO, Fazlur Rehman, briefed the governor about the progress made under the Taameer-i-Karachi programme, and informed that work was in progress on 16 road projects at a cost of Rs1,156.07 million, four flyover projects worth Rs1,553 million, two underpasses costing Rs205 million, 19 sewerage schemes for Rs102.801 million, and 24 water supply schemes worth Rs96.509 million.

Besides, he said that nine road construction schemes, eight flyovers and bridges, one underpass, 25 sewerage schemes, seven water supply schemes, two solid waste management project, and one project each of master plan and GIS Base Map were in their before-the-start-of-work processes. - APP
