KARACHI, Nov 18: The Sindh governor, who is also the chancellor of the University of Karachi, has appointed a new dean for the varsity's faculty of medicine with immediate effect.

According to a notification, a professor of physiology at the Karachi Medical and Dental College, Prof Moinuddin Ghauri, has been appointed as the Dean of Medicine Faculty, KU for a three-year period.

Mr Ghauri, a former KU student, with a doctorate degree from abroad, would replace Dr S Tipu Sultan, a senior professor of the Dow Medical College, who was yet to complete the sanctioned three-year tenure as dean of medicine.

A source at the KU said the appointment of a new dean was due since the DMC had become a constituent unit of the Dow University of Health Sciences.

Under the rules, the KU had to appoint a dean for its faculty from within the senior teachers employed at educational institutions affiliated with it.

The existing dean of Islamic Studies KU, Dr Abdur Rashid, has completed the sanctioned tenure on the post, and a notification with regard to appointment of a new dean for the faculty was awaited by the varsity administration. Dr Rashid's term as dean expired on Nov 4.

Following recommendations by the VC office, information was received from certain quarters about the appointment of another professor on the post, but the chancellor's secretariat had not been able to notify the name of the new dean for the Islamic Studies faculty so far, said a senior KU teacher.
