KARACHI, Aug 28: Leader of the Opposition Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Saturday that the method adopted for a change of prime minister has "tarnished the image of the country abroad".

It made "a mockery" of the constitution and the law," the Maulana said while talking to newsmen at Karachi airport on his arrival on Saturday.

He stated that with the induction of Shaukat Aziz as prime minister, both the president and the prime minister now have similar views ideologically which was extremely dangerous for the country and the nation.

Maulana Fazalur Rahman, who is also secretary-general of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, said that the change in the country brought about by the rulers was totally wrong and it was a joke.

The Maulana, who arrived here from Islamabad, with MMA President Qazi Hussain Ahmed for the first time after a two-month ban on their entry in Sindh, said that new developments have turned the situation more sensitive and crucial.

However, he said, the MMA would reactivate and organize the nation and continue its legal and constitutional struggle and fulfil its obligation by continuing a struggle for the security of the country, supremacy of law, constitution and the Parliament and against the United States intervention.

He said that the MMA strategy had resulted in uniting the opposition and "we would strive together in the future."

Maulana Fazalur Rahman said that today the Ummah had been facing hard times as the US was committing excesses against Muslims.

He said the events unfolding had justified the MMA stand and even the US investigation agencies report on 9/11 had proved that the US aggression on Afghanistan was wrong and likewise voice was being raised in the US that reports about presence of weapons mass destruction in Iraq were wrong.

The MMA leader said the US war was not against terrorism but against Muslims.

He said people in Europe and the US were justifying our stand which has put the US authorities on the defensive.

The MMA leaders have arrived here to attend a joint meeting of the Ittehad Tanzimat Madaris and the MMA in which decisions will be taken to formulate a joint strategy against raids and un-called for arrest of Ulema and interference by the government in Madressahs.

Referring to the situation in Balochistan, he said that the on-going operation in Balochistan was not being carried out by the provincial or federal governments but by those institutions which were not authorised to take such decisions.

MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that the opposition parties would continue their constitutional struggle for transfer of power to real representatives of the people and for restoration of a real democratic order in the country.

"We will adopt peaceful and democratic means to attain our objectives", he said.

In reply to a question, Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that the MMA never legged behind in keeping the joint opposition united and always represented the aspirations of the people with tolerance and restraint and would continue its struggle with the same spirit.

The MMA chief said that Dec 31 was the constitutional deadline for the president to become a civilian by removing his uniform.

Terming the propaganda against the MMA as baseless, he said if anyone had any proof against the MMA, he should go to the court and prove it.

He referred to the situation in Iraq and said that the shrine of Hazrat Ali and other sacred places have been made a target by the US army and in the given situation, the MMA was striving to protect the interests of the Muslims while the rulers were backing it.

The US, he said, was wreaking a havoc on Iraqis.

MMA leaders Dr Mairajul Huda, Maulana Abdul Karim Abid, Qari Mohammad Usman, Nasarullah Shaji, Younas Barai and others received Qazi Hussain and Maulana Fazlur Rahman at the airport.
