KARACHI, March 27: The City Council on Saturday echoed with slogans against the city district government Karachi and the Sindh government for ignoring Lyari in development projects.

The council members also lamented the failure of the government to arrest the killers of PPP MPA Abdullah Murad.

Council members were in a fix whether to discuss only the killing of PPP MPA or policies of the CDGK and Sindh government towards Lyari Town.

They were also critical of non-payment of arrears to council members.

The situation turned ugly when one council member, Habib Hasan, from Lyari Town left his seat and staged a sit-in in the middle of the council hall against the step-motherly treatment being meted out to Lyari by the CDGK.

A number of council members, expressing solidarity with him also joined him and strongly protested against the policies of the CDGK for completely ignoring Lyari Town regarding development activities.

Habib Hasan announced that he would submit his resignation from council's membership in the next session on Monday against the indiscriminate policies of the CDGK towards Lyari residents.

He said that civic infrastructure has collapsed in Lyari Town and dilapidated conditions of roads, shortage of water, overflowing gutters etc are a common sight in Lyari, and since the inception of new local government, neither any major development work had been initiated, nor any project of Karachi Development Packages had been initiated in Lyari.

"The unjust policies of the CDGK towards Lyari Town can be gauged from the fact that City Nazim a few days back did not meet a delegation of Lyari's elected representatives," he mentioned.

He said that Lyari's representatives were asked to wait for the City Nazim as he was pre-occupied with other engagements despite the fact that they were called by City Nazim himself for a meeting.

"They waited for about three hours, but when City Nazim did not turn up, they left the CDGK's office protesting against the attitude of the City Nazim, he maintained.

Apart from the problems of Lyari Town, a majority of council members lashed out at the Sindh government for its failure to arrest the killers of slain PPP MPA Abdullah Murad and sought one to two days for a debate.

Saeed Ghani, Qazi Saddaruddin, Siddique Rathore, Khalid Arshi, Dilawar Shah and Abdul Razzaq Siddique also spoke.-PPI
