SHEIKHUPURA, Feb 7: The federal government under section 22-A and 22-B (CRPC) has delegated powers of 'justice of peace' to all the chairmen and members of the district public safety commissions (PSCs) throughout the country.

The members of district public safety commissions will enjoy the powers to release any person detained by the police unlawfully and without any justification.

The district public safety commission members can entertain complaints regarding search without warrants, illegal trespassing and detention, torture, delay or refusal in registering FIRs, and other wrongdoings of police.

When contacted, Sheikhupura District Public Safety Commission chairman Hafiz Ahsan Ahmed Khokhar advocate confirmed the notification issued by the federal government, delegating powers of "Justice of Peace" to all the district public safety commissions' chairmen and members.

Mechanic killed: A mechanic was gunned down by six drunk men at Jatri Kohna in the jurisdiction of Sadar Farooqabad Police Station, some 25km away from here, on Saturday.

Sources said that Hanif, Mustansar, Jamil and others were playing loud music at a village square after getting drunk. Shahbaz (26), who ran a shop in the vicinity, was allegedly shot dead when he tried to stop them from disturbing others.

The police claim to have arrested four of the accused.
