LAHORE, March 20: Four-year-old chestnut English filly, Golden Drift, romped home to win the Pepsi Eclipse Stakes Of Pakistan run over 2000m in a record fastest timing during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the jampacked Racecourse on Sunday.
This filly from English sire Inchinor out-of-Carpet Of Leaves, Golden Drift was given a perfect ride by jockey M. Hanif, who urged the filly at the right moment on entering the straight and she responded fantastically clocking record timing of two minute 2 1/5 seconds over the distance.
The filly bettered the 42-year-old previous record of two mins 3 1/5 secs set by the Great Nero in February 1963. Golden Drift beat chestnut English horse, Al Hattab by over six lengths while Naseeb and Ranny completed the frame.
In all, six ran for the event in which all runners got the support of their connections.
Golden Drift took home the winner’s share of Rs150,000 along with a cup.
Horses placed second and third got Rs100,000 and Rs50,000 respectively.
A race earlier, the Mountain Dew Cup contested over 1600m was annexed by the bay filly Trace Charm, who beat Tora Bora by three-fourth of a length in a tight finish.
Owned by Lt. Col (retd) Masood Pervaiz and trained by Javaid Shirazi, the winner was steered by riding boy Faisal Tahir.
Running Stage and Young Emperor completed the board among a dozen starters.
Sunday’s races drew a capacity number of sports connoisseurs, whose size was only surpassed on Derby day races.
