SUKKUR, Jan 31: Sindh irrigation secretary Ashfaq Memon on Monday visited the Sukkur Barrage along with other high officials of the department.
He also met officers of the geophysics department and ordered them to prepare a detailed investigation report about the barrage pillars and their plinths.
The officers were asked to submit the report to irrigation high-ups in 10 days. He also directed them to submit him a report about the extent of damage to the pillars after silt clearing.
Earlier, a report had been submitted by German experts who had thoroughly screened the structure of the barrage through modern equipment. It had been said in the report that the plinths of the pillars of spans 1, 2 and 4 had weakened and cracks had developed in the pillars after excavating slit from there.
The irrigation secretary also met officials of the National Development Consultants and discussed various aspects of the repair work of the barrage with them. He also visited the RUK Complex where work on the Dadu Canal was underway.
In the wake of recent reports that cracks in the Sukkur Barrage have widened, high-ups of the Frontier Works Organization are scheduled to visit the barrage on Tuesday.
