LAHORE, Dec 12: Pakistan hockey needs fresh blood more than ever after captain Waseem Ahmad and fearsome penalty corner striker Sohail Abbas bid adieu on Sunday, saying they wanted to pave way for the younger lot - both the key players announced retirement from international hockey soon after securing the Champions Trophy bronze following a 3-2 win over India.

"I have planned to leave Pakistan hockey as I wanted to make room for youngsters, I have family commitments. I think this is the most appropriate time to quit. "It is better to leave in a dignified manner rather than being disgraced and kicked out. Pakistan has talented players who can take over. I wanted to leave after winning a major title but feel sad the wish did not come true," Waseem told reporters.

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had forced former captain Mohammad Sarwar to retire last year as alleged by the striker. The selectors ousted Sarwar, saying he was past his prime.

Waseem, a slick left-half and a veteran of two World Cups, Olympics and eight Champions Trophy tournaments, said he had not decided to retire because of professional leagues, although he had offers to play in leagues abroad.

"I might consider playing in the 2006 World Cup if called. Since league is not as hectic as international hockey, I have decided to quit and play in league," he said.

Waseem, 28, however, said he had not informed the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) about the decision since a player had the right to play or announce retirement on his own.

"I think a player does not to need take permission from the PHF before starting his hockey career. Similarly, a player does not need to inform the PHF before announcing retirement as it is his personal matter," he said.

However, Waseem, who made his debut in the 1996 Champions Trophy in Chennai, said he had not taken the decision because of any pressure from any quarter including PHF. The pair were of the opinion that foreign coaches should be given charge of the junior and senior sides and development programme.
