KARACHI, Nov 5: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that the bill passed by the National Assembly against honour killings is a welcome and positive step.

After the passage of this bill, he said, "we have made advancement against the obsolete custom of Karo-Kari and have not lagged behind." He was talking to a delegation of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan which called on him at the Governor House here on Friday.

The delegation comprised Anis Haroon, Uzma Noorani, Danish Zubairi and Atiya Dawood. Sindh law secretary Ch Iftekhar Ahmed, principal secretary Akhtar Zamin and other officials were also present.

The governor said that Sindh had played a leading role in having a bill passed from the National Assembly. He said that soon after taking over as the governor, he had started struggle against this oppressive custom because creation of an awareness in the society and its condemnation in every field, including the political field, is a must.

Sindh minister and law secretary informed that it was because of personal efforts of the governor that movement against karo-kari got a spur. Previously, there existed no such movement. He said due to efforts of the governor, a draft law against the menace was prepared on behalf of the province and sent to related forums for necessary action.

The HR delegation appreciated the efforts made by the governor and hoped that the recommendations made in this regard will receive due consideration. The governor assured of his full cooperation. The governor also apprised the delegation about the legislative process regarding consumer's rights. -APP
