WANA, Oct 29: A soldier and a civilian were killed and three security personnel were wounded in attacks by militants and counter-attacks by security forces in the North and South Waziristan tribal regions on Friday , official sources said.

Eyewitnesses said that a military convoy hit a landmine activated by remote control in the North Waziristan tribal region at Friday afternoon. Three soldiers were injured. The convoy was on way to Razmak from Mirali. After the explosion, troops opened fire. A shepherd was hit by a bullet and died of the injury on way to hospital.

Reports reaching here said that militants also attacked security forces in the Karwan Manza area in the South Waziristan region on Friday. An official said that one soldier was killed in the attack.

Some clashes were reported to have taken place in Kotkai in the Spin Raghzay area on Thursday night. In a related development, the political authorities on Friday announced a compensation of Rs500,000 for each of the 15 tribesmen killed in an artillery attack on a Jirga in Spinkay Raghzay on Oct 25, according to an official source. The government announced Rs200,000 for each of the 13 persons wounded in the incident.

A three-member jirga headed by Malik Mira Jan visited Kotakai and held talks with the families of the victims. A pro-government jirga will leave for Kotkai in Spinkay Raghzay under the 'Nanawathi' tribal tradition in which a jirga visits victim's family and seeks forgiveness.

The jirga would take along 15 lambs in accordance with the tradition. Although the military authorities have so far denied that security forces had anything do with the killing of the 15 people, Friday's decision of the political administration indicated that they had accepted their responsibility.

The Corps Commander, Peshawar, Lt-Gen Safdar Husain, has already announced Rs200,000 compensation for each of the victims and has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
