QUETTA, Oct 5: The chief minister has ordered the formation of a five-member committee to investigate a man's death after the Shahwani tribesmen staged a demonstration in front of the provincial assembly accusing the police of an extra-judicial killing.
The security had been beefed up to counter any eventuality. The issue was also taken up in the assembly by the leader of the opposition on the first day of its current session here on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Jam Mohammad Yousuf told newsmen after meeting elders of the Shahwani tribe that the Sept 25 incident would be investigated by a committee that would include a judge of the Balochistan High Court, Home Minister Shoaib Nausherwani, leader of the opposition Kachkol Baloch, Malik Ghafoor Kasi, a senior police officer, and a representative of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, adding that it would submit its report within a month.
The house, chaired by Speaker Jamal Shah Kakar, adopted a resolution tabled by the minister for agriculture and welfare that urged the federal government for fresh legislation on seeds, adding that it was necessary to change the seeds ordinance in consultation with the provincial government as it did not fulfil the requirements of the people or the private sector.
The house approved an adjournment motion moved by the opposition members to discuss non-issuance of the lapsed funds for development projects for MPAs. The issue would now be discussed on Thursday.
The chair disposed of two privilege motions moved by the opposition members following assurances by the provincial finance minister that the summary of unemployed veterinary doctors that would be submitted in the next meeting of the provincial cabinet and the assembly staff would soon get their bonuses.
Earlier, on a point of order raised by the leader of the opposition, the speaker asked the home minister and opposition members to meet the elders of the Shahwani tribe, who were calling for lodging an FIR against the police officials for what they termed was an extra-judicial killing.
Karim Shahwani was killed on Sept 25 in front of his own home. Home Minister Mir Shoaib Nausherwani, opposition leader Kachkol Baloch, Nawab Aslam Raisani, parliamentary leader of PPPP, Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, parliamentary leader of the National Party, Habib Jalib Baloch, secretary-general of the BNP (Mengal group) addressed the protestors.
Home minister assured that the chief minister and the provincial government would take all necessary steps, adding that the chief minister's decision would be to the satisfaction of the tribesmen.
Mr Kachkol, Sardar Zehri and Habib Jalib criticized police officers for committing what he termed an extra-judicial killing of Karim Shahwani. They also criticized the government for what they termed its passive approach on the sensitive issue.
