KARACHI, Oct 5: Reviewing progress on various development schemes under the Taameer-i-Karachi Programme at a meeting held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday , City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said that Karachiites have pinned great hopes on this programme given to the city by President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

He said that development works in the city's industrial area, Quaidabad, and at the M.A. Jinnah Road would be initiated soon, and the stake holders should not delay the launch of projects assigned to them.

The meeting was informed that development works had begun at Shahrah-i-Ghalib, while the departments concerned had been approached with regard to the shifting of cables and old and obsolete lines, which hindered construction of Mai Kolachi and M.A. Jinnah roads.

He called for efforts for removal of impediments in the way of projects under the Taameer-i-Karachi Programme, and asked the utility organizations and stake holders to extend full cooperation to each other in the larger interest of the public.

The nazim took notice of delays on the part of the Export Promotion Bureau in the implementation of infrastructure improvement schemes in the city's industrial areas.

He pointed out that exports would increase with infrastructure development at industrial areas in North Karachi and F.B. Area, and the people would get new job opportunities.

The meeting was informed that a traffic improvement plan was being prepared for the areas from Tower to Empress Market. City nazim directed the officials concerned that before undertaking the road construction work, alternative routes for traffic movement be identified, so that citizens might not face difficulties.

DCO Mir Hussain Ali said all facilities should be provided by the city government for projects by the stake-holders. The meeting was informed that the Steel Mill was examining the proposals of two companies for the construction of Quaidabad Flyover, and one of them would be awarded the contract soon.

It was also decided to remove all encroachments coming in the way of the flyover. The meeting was also attended by Brig Junaid Ahmed of the NLC, Water and Sanitation EDO Brig Iftekhar Ahmed, Works EDO Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi, Transport EDO Dr Tahir Soomro, Master Plan EDO Ateeq Baig, Revenue EDO Mohammed Waseem, besides officials of the Pakistan Steel, EPB, State Bank, Karachi Port Trust, PIA and other departments.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE: City nazim has started visiting various towns to review the cleanliness campaign, which kicked off on Tuesday. The nazim visited Gulberg Town, went to the Control room and inspected the first-day programme chart and staff attendance register.

Chairman of the cleanliness campaign committee and Gulshan Town Nazim, Abdul Wahab, Gulberg Town Nazim Farooq Naimatullah and other officials accompanied the city nazim during his visit to the town.

City nazim talked to the staff of garbage-lifting vehicles, dumpers and loaders, and said all employees should work with dedication and missionary spirit to make the city clean and beautiful.

Gulberg Town's nazim explained the campaign plan and said the town and its all union councils had started cleanliness drive simultaneously. He said a complaint centre had been set up to take action on public complaints, and the control room would be manned by five persons.

Giving details about Gulberg Town, he said it had five UCs, with an area of over 5.5 sq-mile and had 14-Km-long water drains. Garbage had been extracted from drains for smooth water flow, he added.

An anti-pye dog drive was simultaneously being carried out along with the cleanliness campaign, and there were rewards for killing more than 100 dogs. Farooq Naimatullah said that during the campaign, tree plantation would also be carried out, for which a 25-member team had been constituted. Cleaning of road from Gharibabad to Moosa Colony had been started, while garbage would also be lifted from Bengali Para, he added. -APP
