GUJRANWALA, Sept 27: Four policemen, including an SHO, who killed a landlord at a picket in Wahando on Sunday, were arrested on the orders of the DPO here on Monday.
SHO Ijaz Warraich and constables Muhammad Ashfaq, Zafar, Liaquat Ali and Muhammad Ali had signalled Sardar Muhammad to stop his vehicle at the picket. But the landlord reportedly pushed up the speed of his vehicle instead. At this, the policemen opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.
Later an, the SHO aired the message that a proclaimed offender had been killed in an encounter. When DPO Arif Mushtaq along with other senior officers reached there and knew about the actual situation, he got registered a murder case against the accused policemen. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased landlord was handed over to his heirs after post-mortem.
LAUDED: DIG Altaf Qamar has lauded the Dhulley police and City ASP Ali Hassan for arresting the killers of a minor son of the Rajkot union council Nazim. The DIG also visited the residence of the Nazim M Asif here on Monday and condoled him on the murder of his son Hussain Riasat. Accused Asif, Tariq Nasir and Qaiser had kidnapped the boy over an enmity with his father and later threw his body after killing him outside his house on Sunday.
MEDICAL CLASSES: The Pakistan Medical Association and other doctors' organizations have expressed their concern over the delay in launching of classes at the DHQ hospital and constituted an eight-member committee to this effect.
At a meeting held here on Monday, presided over by PMA President Dr Zahid Mahmood, the participants said ex-president Muhammad Rafiq Tarar and Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi had already promised to set up medical college in Gujranwala and introduction of classes at the DHQ hospital.
They were of the view that influential people got their children admitted to private medical colleges, but the poor and middle class could not afford heavy medical expenditures. They said the industrial city with four million population needed a medical college.
ROBBERY BID: The National Highway and Motorway Police on Monday foiled a robbery attempt near Kamoki on the GT Road. Reports said four highwaymen drove away with a wagon after snatching its keys from driver Ashraf at Madu Khalil village.
A motorway police patrol signalled them to stop on the GT Road, but the driver accelerated the vehicle while the other gangsters opened fire on police. At some distance away they left the vehicle and escaped.
