KARACHI: The Irteqa Institute of Social Sciences and the Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA), in a joint statement, have condoled the death of renowned artist Syed Ali Imam, an icon of art world, intellectual and a humanist.

Syed Ali Imam, well-known in the country and abroad, highly accomplished in fine art, was also endowed with the intellect and spirit of a socially committed person. In his youth, he was also a political activist and a trade union worker.

Ali Imam, it may be recalled, was one of the pioneers of peace movement in Pakistan, who addressed the opening session of the Pakistan peace conference jointly organized by the Irteqa, the PWA and several other literary and cultural organizations in November, 2000. His lecture ‘on art for peace’ enlightened the audience and inspired the young artists who still remember him with love and reverence.

Later, he also became a member of the presidium of the conference and remained a source of guidance for most of us, the joint statement added.

The art world in Pakistan has become poorer by Ali Imam’s sad demise, who could have contributed a lot to the realm of creative art and culture despite his failing health during the recent past.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, Syed Jawaid Iqbal, has expressed grief and sorrow at the demise Ali Imam.

He said: “I knew Ali Imam both as an artist and as a friend. He was a man of many talents. He was very humble and caring. His presence will be greatly missed.”

Mr Iqbal spoke about the many achievements of the late Ali Imam with special reference to his services as the first principal of the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts. He said Mr Imam had proved to be a mentor for many young aspiring artists who had benefited from his vast experience and passion for painting.—HA
