KARACHI, Sept 1: The charged-parking system in the limits of the city district government has temporarily been done away with in the wake of a city council resolution which sought an end to the system recently. However, a final decision on the future of the system will be taken shortly by the city nazim, sources said.
When City Nazim Niamatullah Khan was contacted to know whether he had received the recommendations of a nine-member committee constituted a week back to suggest ways and means to improve the charged-parking system and to review the legal aspects involved in it, he replied in the negative, saying "a final decision about the charged-parking system will be taken by him in the light of recommendations of the committee".
"The CDGK has already cancelled an agreement with the contractor on charged-parking system and the committee has also been asked to review a proposal on setting up parking lots at major busy roads and commercial centres.
The committee was asked to furnish its report within 15 days and as such the committee still has six days at its disposal for completing its task, sources said. The committee is headed by Naib Nazim Tariq Hassan Khan and its members include CDGK's senior presiding officer Muslim Pervez, EDO of finance and planning, EDO law, DIG Traffic, District Officer (Recovery), Mr Saifuddin, Zahid Saeed and Hanif Chattani.
