MIRPURKHAS, Aug 30: The district council demanded on Monday a full-fledged inquiry into a road accident near Mirwah Gorchani that claimed nine lives, six of the victims being children, and called for legal action against those responsible.

The meeting demanded that compensation of Rs50,000 and Rs200,000 should be paid to the heirs of each deceased by the district government and the Sindh government respectively.

Members Yawar Ali Khan, Akbar Dars, Saeed Memon, Khalid Pervez Sadaf, Mirza Masroor Baig, Raheem Bux Makrani and Mian Mohammad Saleem held the traffic police responsible for the tragedy. The meeting, presided over by convener Nawab Mohammad Yunus Talpur, also offered fateha for those who died in the accident.

SUICIDE BID: A youth tried to commit suicide by taking pesticides in Phuladiyun town on Monday after his marriage proposal was refused. Taiyab, 25, son of Kamal, was admitted to the Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital in a critical condition following the incident. It was said that he fell in love with a girl who, later, refused to marry him.

SEMINAR: The regional coordinator of the Aurat Foundation, Aslam Brohi, has called for a joint struggle to ensure participation of women in the political process. He was speaking at a seminar "The participation of women in political process", organized by the Citizen Action Committee here on Sunday.

Mr Brohi said success of local bodies system was linked with the participation of women as it would lead to development and progress of the country. Riffat Yasmeen said the Aurat Foundation was working for better economic condition for women in rural and deprived areas.

She said the government had provided opportunities to women to play their role. Azhar Abbas, Shamim Jhundeer, taluka councillors Seema Nasreen, Shahnaz Bano, Safia Baloch, Rais Ahmed and others also spoke on the occasion.

FIR: The taluka police on Saturday registered a case against the truck driver who had escaped following an accident near Mirwah Gorchani in which nine persons of a family were killed and 20 others injured.
