LAHORE: Girls keep domination in BA, BSc

LAHORE, Aug 30: Keeping up their past academic performance, the girls have this year again clinched five out of six positions in the Punjab University's BA, BSc annual examinations, 2004.

The results declared by the controller of examinations at a prize distribution ceremony at university's Faisal Auditorium on Monday, showed that only one male private candidate could make up to the third position in the BA examination.

According to the results notification, 128,832 candidates took the examination of whom 41,650 were declared successful showing a pass percentage of 32.33, down from last year's 37.91 per cent.

It may be mentioned that 40,838 regular and 61,770 private candidates had appeared in full subjects. In science group (BSc), Ayesha Hameed (roll number 51372) of the Kinnaird College clinched the first position with 678 marks out of total 800 marks.

Afshan Hannan Mirza (roll number 52325) of the Government College for Women, Samanabad, Lahore, secured second position by obtaining 672 marks. Sadia Zubair (roll number 30906) of the Government College for Women, Maragzar Colony, Gujrat, bagged the third position by securing 658 marks.

In the humanities group (BA), Marya Riaz (roll number 48276) of the FG Degree College for Women, Kharian Cantt, stood first with 634 marks. Private candidates Riffat-un-Nisa (roll number 85126) from Mandi Bahauddin and Awais Aslam Mustafa Kamal Pasha (roll number 82395) from Narowal secured second and third positions with 625 and 618 marks, respectively.

The preamble to the notification says that 111,376 candidates appeared in BA examinations of whom 35,012 passed with the pass percentage of 31.44. In BSc, 6,638 of 17,456 candidates were declared pass with the pass percentage of 38.03. Last year, the pass percentage in BA was 32.90 and 37.46 in BSc.

Of 41,650 candidates, who were declared successful, 7,350 have obtained first division, 30,914 got second division, while 2,480 candidates third. Similarly, of 1,748 candidates who appeared in the additional subjects, Fazil, Wafaq-ul-Madaris, nurses and English only, 906 candidates were declared successful.

The data pertaining to regular college candidates shows that the pass percentage in BA is 46.70 and 46.01 in BSc. In BA 31,647 regular candidates appeared out of whom 14,780 passed the examinations. In BSc, 4,011 of 9,191 regular candidates were declared pass.

According to gender-wise break-up of regular candidates, 25,599 girls appeared in humanities group of whom 12,995 passed the examination showing 50.76 per cent results, while the pass percentage of boys in this group is 29.51 as 1,785 passed the examination out of a total 6,048 candidates.

In science group, 4,293 girls took the examinations of whom 2,743 were declared pass showing 63.89 pass percentage, while in the same category 4,898 boys appeared of whom 1,268 passed which is 25.89 per cent.

Controller of examinations Prof Dr Ehsan Malik said on the occasion the university had set up 444 centres, 121 local and 323 mofussil, to conduct the examination. He said centre superintendents, examiners and university monitoring teams had reported 252 unfair means cases, which were decided before the declaration of the results except 11 complaint cases.

He said 442 candidates wrote wrong roll numbers on their answer-sheets. This year, he said, the university dispatched result cards on Aug 27 to ensure that all candidates should get results before their formal declaration.

Prof Malik said all the candidates who appeared in the subject of physical education (Paper-A) had been given three grace marks on the recommendation of the board of studies and approved by the vice-chancellor.

Vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood also spoke on the occasion. Later, Education Minister Mian Imran Masood distributed merit certificates and cash prizes among the position holders.

The first three position holders in both groups were given cash prizes of Rs75,000, Rs65,000 and Rs50,000, respectively. Last year, the cash prizes for the first three position holders in both groups were Rs50,000, Rs35,000 and Rs25,000, respectively.

LAHORE, Aug 30: The BA/BSc (supplementary) examinations for 2004 will be held in the first week of October while the annual examinations for 2005 will be held in April next year.

For the supplementary examination, the Punjab University will receive admission forms till Sept 10. Whereas, the forms for the annual examination, 2005, will be received till Nov 15.
