KARACHI, May 23: An additional district and sessions judge, West, Ms Naseem Mansoor, sentenced on Thursday a car hijacker to five years’ rigorous imprisonment.

Saeed Khan had hijacked a car from Abdur Razzaq on May 10, 1997 at gunpoint in the police limits of Mominabad.

The car hijacker was convicted after he confessed that he had hijacked the car.

ARRAIGNED: An additional district and sessions judge, East, Syed Sagheer Zaidi, formally arraigned a leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Shoaib Bukhari, in five different cases.

The Muttahida leader, however, denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.

The cases, registered in 1995 and 1996 by the Korangi police, pertained to murder, attempt to murder and violence.

The judge fixed June 6 for the hearing of the case.

INDICTED: An anti-terrorism court indicted a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a kidnapping for ransom case.

Pleading not guilty, Mirza Asif Baig alias Asif Duddan, however, denied the charges before Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3, who ordered the prosecution to produce its witnesses on May 27.

A Muttahida worker, Mehmood Ali, had earlier been convicted and sentenced to death by the ATC for kidnapping a building contractor for ransom.

According to the prosecution, the Muttahida workers kidnapped Mohammed Javed on March 14, 1999 in Bantwa Nagar, Liaquatabad, and demanded 20,000 US dollars for his release.

The same night Mohammed Jehangir, brother of the hostage, paid Rs50,000 to the accused in Korangi. However, police raided a house in Azam Nagar, Liaquatabad, the same night and recovered Javed. Mehmood was arrested, but his accomplices escaped.

BAIL GRANTED: The same additional district and sessions judge, East, granted bail to a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a case pertaining to the killing of four people.

The judge gave Syed Rashid Ali alias Rashid Kala bail in the sum of Rs200,000.

The Muttahida man was booked and arrested by the Saudabad police for killing Imtiaz Koti, Rizwan Koti, Habibur Rahman and Shaukat in an attack on March 23, 1998 near Liaquat Market.

ACQUITTED: An additional district and sessions judge, West, Mohammed Sagheer Rana, acquitted a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a case.

The case against Maqsood Ahmed alias Maqsood Video Wala was registered by the Pak Colony police for allegedly injuring Iqbal Pervaiz and Arif.

The prosecution, however, could not prove its case against the accused.
