KARACHI, May 22: A unit incharge of a proscribed organization was shot dead by unknown assailants in F.B. Area on Wednesday morning.

Police said that Qari Mohammad Ibrahim, aged 32, unit incharge, F.B. Area of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, had gone to Darul Atfal Iqra School, Block 15, to drop his children on his motorcycle (MNQ-3294).

On his way back, two unknown assailants also riding a motorcycle opened fire at him, at a little distance away from the school and escaped. He died on the spot.

Police said that the unknown attackers were probably waiting for Qari Mohammad Ibrahim.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for postmortem examination, police said.

Hospital sources said that the victim took three bullets — one in the head and two in his chest.

An FIR against unknown persons has been lodged by the victim’s father, Haji Rahim.

Namaz-i-Janaza for the victim was held at Masjid-i-Ghousia, Water pump, in the evening.

Later, the victim’s body was sent to Muzaffarabad for burial, police said.

Earlier, police denied permission to the SSP, which wanted to offer the funeral prayer of the victim at Lasbella Chowk.

The victim had five children and resided in Block 9, F.B. Area, police said.

arrests: Police rounded up over 50 persons from Nishtar Road and different parts of the city, following a riot situation that followed an attack on a religious procession at Nishtar Road on Tuesday evening.

Police conducted raids in Soldier Bazaar, Baloch Para, PIB Colony and some parts of F.B. Area and took several persons into custody.

One person died, over a dozen others were injured and as many as 40 vehicles were torched when a religious procession of 8th Rabi-ul-Awal passing through Nishtar Road was pelted with stones by miscreants.

City police chief, Asad Jehangir, said that so far 52 suspects have been arrested by the police from Nishtar Road and different parts of the city during night-long raids.

He said that some identifiable suspects from both the sides were arrested by the police on-the-spot on Tuesday night.

Several suspects who were engaged in brick-batting and some arsonists were also arrested by the police on Tuesday night, the police chief said.

The police said that an FIR has been registered at the Jamshed Quarters police station against miscreants from both sides.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed on Wednesday at Nishtar Road as the road was kept closed by the police in the morning.

The police was also seen busy assessing the extent of the damage caused in Tuesday’s violence. Security was beefed up around Lasbella and Teen Hatti areas.

Similarly, the number of police personal deployed was increased at different Imambargahs and sensitive mosques in the city.

The police said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident and those found responsible would be brought to book.

The IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, visited the affected area on Wednesday.
