KARACHI, July 1: The Labour Party Pakistan has decided to reorganize itself at the grassroots level in all 18 towns of the city district, so that the party could participate in the next local bodies elections.

This decision was taken at the first-day session of the party's Karachi Congress on Thursday. The delegates, on the occasion, highlighted the political situation in the country in international perspective.

Referring to the ongoing power struggle and economic crisis in the country, LPP chairman Nisar Shah attributed it to dictates of the IMF and World Bank, saying that these institutions wanted to get control over national resources.

He said that after the election of a liberal politician, Mr Manmohan Singh, as India's prime minister, the international monetary institutions wanted to impose their man, Shaukat Aziz, on the people of Pakistan to push their agenda of privatization, which would add to miseries of the people.

The only way to stop the rulers from pursuing anti-people agenda was to organize the party at grassroots level as an alternative political body of the workers, he said.

LPP Secretary General Farooq Tariq said that the people through out the world had been protesting against globalization, and the US aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq.

He said it was the power of people, which resulted in the defeat of anti-people forces in Spain, India, Venezuela and Brazil, adding that now the fear of 'change' had compelled the country's rulers to take more oppressive and anti-people steps.

Farooq Tariq, announcing the party decision, said that Karachi had been captured by extremists and its people wanted change, adds PPI. "We are struggling for labour class and want to solve problems of people, who are still living in kutchi abadis and undeveloped areas.

He assured that if people of Karachi would elect LPP candidates, their problems would be solved on their doorsteps. Responding to a query, he said that an alliance of leftist parties could be possible in the next local body elections.

In the last session of the first day of the Congress, the office- bearers of the LPP, Karachi chapter, were elected. The office-bearers are: Shaikh Saeed (chairman), Mohsin haji, Liaquat Anjum, Sohail Raza (vice-chairmen), Shehla Rizwan (general secretary), Tariq Gul (Joint Secretary, Finance Secretary), while 28-member working committee of the party was also elected.
