KARACHI, March 29: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Monday an accused, Zulfiqar Ali, to death for killing two sub-inspectors near the US consulate. Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 also imposed a fine of Rs200,000 on Zulfiqar Ali, who will have to undergo an additional five-year term in case of default on the payment.
Zulfiqar Ali snatched the rifle of a constable after shooting and wounding him near the lavatory at the Frere Hall, strode towards the picket and opened fire on the policemen. Sub-inspectors Ameer Badshah and Murtaza died instantly. Five others, three of them constables and a Ranger, were wounded when the convict opened fire at their picket with the rifle he had snatched from his first victim.
The judge sentenced him to a 10-year term for injuring the people. He was also fined Rs100,000 and would have to undergo an additional two-year term in case of default on the payment.
The judge sentenced Zulfiqar Ali to a seven-year term for snatching the official rifle. He also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on him. Another two-year term was awarded to the accused for interfering in official business. A fine of Rs25,000 was imposed on him.
The accused will have to undergo an additional six-month term in case of default. Special public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa examined in all 19 prosecution witnesses.
RANSOM CASE: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a kidnapping for ransom case against a policewoman. The woman is facing the charges of kidnapping her granddaughter for ransom.
Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC-5 fixed Tuesday for the next hearing after the statement of a judicial magistrate. The 50-year-old woman, who was booked and arrested on the complaint of her daughter, denied the charge and pleaded "not guilty" when Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC arraigned her.
Yasmin Tahira was charged with the kidnapping of Nisma, the eight-year-old daughter of her complainant daughter, Bushra, for ransom. She allegedly kidnapped the girl on Oct 28 last year and kept her at different places until she was caught red-handed on Nov 14 at Moro while taking her granddaughter to her hometown in Bhawalpur.
According to the complainant, she lodged a report of her missing daughter on the same day with Kalri police and kept on searching for her. She also advertised the missing of her daughter in the press.
The accused woman allegedly told her daughter that she was in contact with the kidnappers, who were demanding Rs150,000 for Nisma's release. On Nov 14, Yasmeen Tahira took Rs5,000 from her daughter for arranging telephonic conversation between the victim girl and her mother. Special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum has so far examined 13 prosecution witnesses. He would examine the investigation officer on the next hearing.
