DHAKA, Feb 23: Pakistan skipper Khalid Latif led his side to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the Super League round of the ICC Under-19 World Cup at Savar on Monday.
Khalid made 84 not out, and added 142 for the unbroken second-wicket partnership with Abid Ali, as Pakistan overhauled Zimbabwe's total of 141 in only 30 overs. They are already looking strong bets for a place in the semifinals.
Zimbabwe, who earned their Super League place by routing Australia in the Group stages, never looked likely to cause another upset. They lost the toss and were asked to bat first, whereupon Ali Imran trapped Brendan Taylor lbw with his first ball of the match.
He was one of nine batsmen who failed to reach double figures, and the only man to look at all comfortable was the opener James Cameron, who top-scored with a fluent 68.
Cameron added 68 for the third wicket with his captain Tinotenda Mawoyo, but both men fell in quick succession and the innings subsided. Spinners Tariq Mahmood and Mansoor Amjad shared seven wickets between them.
Tinashe Panyangara, the man who did the damage on that occasion, grabbed an early wicket to lift Zimbabwe's prospects. But Pakistan were too strong and eased to victory with 20 overs to spare.
England, helped by unbeaten centuries from the left-handed skipper Alastair Cook (108) and Samit Patel (102), outclassed New Zealand in the day/night fixture at Bangabandhu National Stadium.
In the Plate Championship, Bangladesh and Bangladesh won their respective matches. On Sunday, South Africa pulled off an exciting three-run Super League win to end India's unbeaten record in the competition, under lights at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
In Sunday's other top league game, West Indian fast bowler Lionel Baker bowled West Indies to a 19-run victory with a six-wicket haul against Sri Lanka. In the minor category, Australia, the dethroned champions, sent Scotland packing for 22 all out in 22.3 overs. Nepal beat Papua New Guinea in the other Plate Championship tie by seven wickets.
