DHAKA, Feb 20: Defending champions Australia and hosts Bangladesh both failed to qualify for Super League of ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup on Friday while South Africa scraped through by narrowest of margins.

A two-run victory over Sri Lanka was not enough for Australia to make the playoffs. Australia finished level on points with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe but lost out by virtue of a poorer net run rate. Zimbabwe had thrashed Australia earlier.

Sri Lanka finished top of Group 'A' and will now face India, South Africa and West Indies in Group 1 of Super League. South Africa earned a place by beating England by one wicket at Chittagong Divisional Stadium.

The other Super League group will be contested by England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. Australia, which won last youth World Cup in New Zealand, will contest Group 1 of Plate Championship with Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Scotland.

The other Plate Championship group contains Bangladesh, Canada, Ireland and Uganda. Super League matches will be played in Dhaka, Plate Championship will be held in Chittagong.

There is a rest-day on Saturday before next round of matches on Sunday. Pakistan and India were the only teams to maintain 100 per cent record with three successive victories in their respective groups.

Paceman Riaz Afridi claimed five for 28 as Pakistan defeated the West Indies by 163 runs. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan scored his second century of the tournament with 120 against Bangladesh, who lost by 131 runs.
