DHAKA, Feb 15: Pakistan started their ICC Under-19 World Cup campaign with a clinical eight-win trouncing of Papua New Guinea at the Khulna Divisional Stadium on Sunday.
Over 6,000 people turned out to watch a rather one-sided Group 'D' encounter as Pacific Islanders were shot out for 60 in 17.5 overs after Pakistan skipper Khalid Latif elected to field first.
Man-of-the-Match Riaz Afridi did most of the damage by claiming four for 15 with his medium-pacers. His new ball partner Wahab Riaz claimed two for 27 while leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad cleaned up the tail to finish with incredible figures of three for five in 1.5 overs.
Pakistan needed just 14.5 overs to knock off the runs. New Zealand, meanwhile, battled to a two-wicket win over hosts Bangladesh in Group 'C' at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium with four balls to spare.
Craig Smith (4-43) and Teahu Davis (3-34) shared the wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 202. Opener Nafis Iqbal made 67. England, playing in the southeastern city of Chittagong, beat Nepal by eight wickets in Group 'B'. England scored 192-4 in reply to Nepal's 191-8.
Zimbabwe lost to Sri Lanka by two wickets in the northern city of Bogra. Sri Lanka made 162-8 in reply to Zimbabwe's 161 all out in the Group 'A' tie.
