The bloc had failed in making any headway on the proposed seat adjustments, which sent shock waves in the power brokers camp rekindling a sense of reappraisal, sources said.
Now it remains unclear as to what would be new move to create a vital understanding between the PML-QA and the grand alliance.
The GNA was galvanised by the pro-Musharraf elements working in a haphazard manner by putting together the National Alliance and PML-QA to make seat adjustments in such a manner that no opposition candidate could win.
The meeting on seat adjustment between the two entities deviated from the talks on the subject and, sources said, the leaders smelling a ‘non-conducive’ situation put the burden on provincial organisations of the respective party/alliance.
The PML-QA having many heavyweights in its fold rightly wants maximum seats while the alliance remains reluctant to accept junior partner’s role, despite being a conglomerate of over six parties now.
The Pakistan Awami Tehrik of Tahirul Qadri in the meantime is also working on a two-pronged strategy to make adjustments with the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) on as many seats as possible and to motivate the main opposition parties on making mutual seat adjustments in a way that the PPP, PML-N, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and PAT get a judicious portion of the seats, and in turn succeed to outclass the pro-Musharraf parties.
The sources told Dawn that PPP Vice-Chairman Ghulam Murtaza Pooya had been continuously in touch with Benazir Bhutto.
He was also actively involved in discussing day-to-day issues with Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan to persuade the main contesting parties on an understanding.
In the meanwhile, the MMA, which had been unable after a number of sittings to finalise its own list of candidates for the polls, had now succeeded in making adjustments with the PML-N on all those seats where the pro-Musharraf parties had fielded their joint candidates, some sources said.
Some inside sources said: “The MMA and PML-N have in their respective executive meetings decided not to leave any seat in the country without considering a seat adjustment and keeping in view the strength of pro-Musharraf parties.”
The Mujlis-i-Amal has already succeeded in getting three National Assembly and seven provincial assembly seats of Lahore District in talks with the PML-N, an MMA leader Syed Sibtain Kazmi told Dawn by telephone on Thursday.
He said the MMA was convinced to make every effort in seat adjustments with the PML-N which had also decided the same.
The efforts would be made that the PPP could not field any candidate on these seats, the sources in the MMA claimed. “Some stunning decisions are expected on a number of seats in the country with an aim to defeat the candidates of the government-sponsored parties”, he added.
Mr Kazmi said:”The two sides have discussed and finalised seat adjustment plan in 14 districts of Punjab so far which include Lahore, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Sargodha, Attock and others.”
Meetings remain in progress to make further adjustments between the two parties.
