12 killed in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, May 15: Indian troops shot dead 12 Mujahideen in Kashmir on Wednesday, a day after a major attack left 34 people dead, officials said.

Police said they were intensifying operations against the mujahideen in the wake of Tuesday’s attack.

In the southern district of Rajouri, the Indian army backed by counter-insurgency police shot dead five activists during a fierce gunbattle at Kalru Manu village that erupted after security forces mounted a cordon and search operation, police said.

Seven more guerillas were killed in encounters throughout Kashmir.—AFP
