KARACHI, May 13: Allana with 151 victory points (VP) clinched the Karachi Club Bridge Championship which concluded at KC Bridge Hall Sunday night.
Allana spearheaded by Rehman Allana, Jun-e-Alam Fazli, Rashid-ul-Ghazi, Hasan Jawad, Rashid Jafer and Sultan Siddiqui were so superior in all the departments of the game that they had almost won the title before even shuffling cards for the last round against a team like Giant.
Having 18 VP plus over their nearest rivals Giants, Allana played in a relaxed mood. It seemed a difficult task for Giants to win by 24-6 VP.
They made some aggressive bids to collect each and every possible points. Giants pair of Maj.(Rtd) Zaidi-Masud Saleem bid and made a slam on a shaky defense by Hasan Jawad, but this swing was not enough to stop Allana to win this match by a big margin, adding 24 VP to their tally and win the championship.
Allana 151 VP lost only one match to Shipyard in the sixth round.
Candyland (Zia) put up spirited fight. Having two regular pairs of Hamid-Zia and Khalid-Hasan Askari, the team won five out of seven matches and claimed second position with a score of 124 VP. Facing Allana in the sixth round, they had some chance to test their skill against veterans of the game, but failed to live up to the expectations.
Except an imaginative defense of four hearts by Hasan Askari-Khalid, defending one trick, which their partner Hamid-Zia made with two over tricks, some erratic bidding caused them a 21-9 V.P. defeat.
Shipyard had the distinction of beating the best of the lot, Allana in the fifth round 16-14 V.P. The team comprising Ghufran Ashraf, Shahab Khan, S.M. Ozair, Baber Iqbal and Zahoor Kazmi collected 122 VP for the third berth.
Their sixth round encounter against Giants made all the difference which they lost by a maximum margin of 25-5 V.P. However they recovered fully to gain maximum against Tigers 25-5 which enabled them to secure fourth spot with 119 VP.—APP
