CNIC date for bank accounts extended

KARACHI, Dec 31: The last date for the computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) required for accounts in banks and Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) has been extended for another six months.

The State Bank in a circular issued on Wednesday said that based on the representation received from the banks indicating difficulties in meeting the extended deadline of Dec 31, 2008, it has been decided to extend the date for meeting the said condition up to June 30, 2009.

The banks have been advised to continue aggressive campaign through print and electronic media for creating public awareness on necessity of CNIC for banking purposes. They were also advised to contact the account holders individually, who have not yet provided the attested copy of CNIC.

“Banks and DFIs are also advised to provide information on progress made on the subject on fortnightly basis, within seven days of the close of each fortnight,” the circular said.
