HYDERABAD, May 12: The members of the City Taluka Council staged a walkout from a session of the council here on Saturday to protest against the non-cooperative attitude of Phuleli police with the elected representatives of the people.
The walkout was staged when a member of the council, Usman Abbasi, tabled a motion accusing the police of non-cooperation with the elected representatives and hoodwinking the city Nazim in respect of the arrest of a young man.
Speaking on the motion, Abdul Waheed Ajmeri, Illahi Bux Shaikh, Shahab Munshi and others condemned the indifferent attitude of the police towards the elected representatives and demanded the removal of SHO.
They also raised the slogans against the police.
The convenor and Naib Nazim of the city council, Abdul Qadeer Naghar, adjourned the session for Monday as the council members walked out of the house.
The convenor said a letter would be sent to senior police officials to attend the session on Monday to apprise them of the sentiments of the council members.
In his speech, Naghar said it was the duty of the police to cooperate with the elected representatives.
Reports said that taking notice of the protest of the elected representatives, the high-ups of the police department had suspended two ASIs of the Phuleli police station.
Demo against obscenity: Over 24 activists of the Sindh Naujawan Taraqqi Passand Tanzeem staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday against the spread of narcotics and obscenity across the province.
Speaking at the rally, the founder of the organization, A.D Narejo, said that narcotics was spreading like cancer across the province.
He added that obscenity and vulgarity had reached each and every house through the cable network.
The senior vice president of the organization, Israr Umrani, Saleem Channa and others also spoke on the occasion.
They demanded of the Zila Nazim Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman to shut down the cinemas and hotels in the district involved in exhibiting porno films.
They also demanded that the sale of narcotics be banned.
CHOWKIDARS: The chowkidars of wheat godown, Food Department, along with their children staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday against the non-regularization of their services, non-payment of their salaries and non-acceptance of the charter of demands submitted to the food department by the employees’ federation.
Speaking at the rally, the federation leaders Mohammad Younus Rajpar, Ghulam Shabbir Soomro and others said that food department was the only department where separate rules had been framed for the chowkidars of the wheat godowns.
They said that during the last two years, 300 employees of the department had been promoted but the poor chowkidars, who had been performing duties at the godowns for the last 12 years, were still waiting for the regularization of their services.
They regretted that deductions were made from the salaries of the chowkidars even for the days on which they could not perform their duties due to illness.
They said that the provincial finance minister, Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, had promised that the services of the chowkidars would be regularized, but he did not honour his promise.
They warned that if their problems were not resolved within one week, they would stage a protest sit-in outside the Sindh Secretariat, Karachi.
TEACHERS: Over one dozen teachers of Tharparkar district staged a protest demonstration outside the press club on Sunday against the education department for not appointing them on the vacant posts even after clearing the tests.
Talking to newsmen, they said that the Sindh government had invited applications to fill the vacant posts of primary teachers in all the districts of the province.
They said 900 candidates from Tharparkar district, like the candidates of other districts, had appeared in the examination on May 13, 2001. They added that finally 140 candidates were declared successful in the results of oral examinations held on July 18, 2001.
They said that the results of successful candidates, 131 male and nine female, were announced on September 30, 2001.
They claimed that while the teachers of other districts were duly appointed, the successful candidates of Tharparkar were still waiting for their appointment letters.
They alleged that their appointment was being intentionally delayed by the district government because its own candidates had failed to qualify the examination.
RECRUITMENT TEAM: The assistant selection and recruitment officer, Pakistan Army Selection and Recruitment Centre, Hyderabad, on Saturday announced the registration and selection schedule for the month of May and June.
The recruitment team will visit municipal committee, Dadu, on May 20, municipal committee, Mithi, on May 21 to 24, town committee, Umerkot, on May 29 and 30, municipal committee, Badin, on May 31, municipal committee, Mirpurkhas, on June 5, and municipal committee, Sanghar, on June 12.
