KARACHI, Nov 13: Two people, including a middle-aged woman, were killed on Thursday in acts of violence in different parts of the city, police and witnesses said.
The Manghopir police said the trussed-up body of an unknown man was found in the Hub River in the morning.
They said a Chhipa ambulance shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim, who appeared to be in his mid-30s, had died due to asphyxiation.
They said a piece of rope was also found around the victim’s neck that also bore a visible mark of strangulation. They said the body also bore marks of severe torture.
Later, the police said, the body was kept at the Edhi morgue for want of identification.
They said that a case against unknown culprits was registered on behalf of the state.
Woman shot dead
A middle-aged woman was found shot dead in a house in Bhitaiabad, a shantytown near Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
The Sachal police said that the bullet-riddled body of a woman, who remained unknown till late, was lying in the veranda of House 146/22.
The area SHO, Inspector Ateequr Rehman, told Dawn that the house had been locked for the past many months and efforts were being made to find its owner or tenant. “The neighbours know nothing about the house owner,” he said.
The SHO said the area people contacted the police in the morning when they spotted the body in the veranda through the door, which was ajar.
He said the victim, clad in flower-printed brown shirt and a matching shalwar, was shot dead in the house sometime in the small hours. The police also found three empties at the spot.
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination.
Sources at the JPMC’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim woman, who appeared to be in her early 40s, was shot with three bullets in her upper torso from a very close range as the bullets had pierced the body.
The Sachal police said that they had registered a murder case (FIR703/2008) under Section 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on behalf of the state.
They said the body was later kept at the Edhi morgue for want of identification.
Old man commits suicide
A 65-year-old man committed suicide outside his house in Hasrat Mohani Colony, a shantytown in the Pak Colony police limits.
The police said the victim, Saeed Umer, was a security guard at a factory in Site and he pressed his licensed pistol to his temple and sent a bullet through the skull.
They quoted the victim’s family as telling them that the man had been mentally unstable for the past few months.
The police said the victim had not reported to his workplace for the past one month due to his illness.
They said the victim hailed from Swat.
Newborn found dead
The body of a newborn, stuffed in a plastic shopping bag, was found at a garbage den in Korangi 5.
Sources said a Chhipa ambulance shifted the body to its head office for ablution.
They said the newborn was later buried in the Mewa Shah graveyard.
