ISLAMABAD, May 8: The current Nazim and Naib Nazim of Union Council No 58 Chicha Watni will continue to work till the finalization of their appeals against the order of the Lahore High Court for repolling.

It was ordered by Supreme Court here on Wednesday. The Bench comprised Justice Munir A Shaikh, Justice Qazi Mohmmad Farooq and Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan.

Chaudhry Irshad and Raja Muhammad Jehangir were elected Nazim and Naib Nazim respectively but the candidates at number two position challenged before the Election Tribunal that the matric certificate of Chaudhry Irshad was fake.

The Election Tribunal disqualified Chaudhry Irshad and Raja Mohmmad Jehangir and asked Murtaza Bhular and Chaudhry Rauf to start working as Nazim and Naib Nazim respectively.

The disqualified panel went before the Lahore High Court which ordered that the panel on number two must not be allowed to work, rather repolling should be done.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the Lahore High Court’s decision and restored the order of the Election Tribunal till the finalization of the case.

Mohammad Iqbal Khichi appeared on behalf of petitioners. The next hearing of the case will begin in the first week of June.

The Naib Nazim who was affected by the decision requested the Court that since his matric certificate was not fake, he might be allowed to continue work. He had raised the point before the Lahore High Court but his plea was not accepted.

The Court said that this issue would be examined later and ordered that the record of the high court be placed before it.

The court bench also ordered that the next panel of Nazim and Naib Nazim who got the highest vote will take over till the finalization of the case.—APP
