ISLAMABAD, May 6: The government is trying to put in place tripartite labour committees at district level to sort out labour-related disputes at micro level as part of the devolution plan.

This was stated by the Federal Minister for Labour and Overseas Pakistanis, Owais Ahmed Ghani said on Monday while talking to a delegation of labour wing of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

The minister said the government was redrafting existing laws to provide better terms and conditions to the workers in tune with international labour standards. The laws are expected to be put in place by October, the minister said.

Mr Ghani said harmonious relations between employees and employers in the private and public sectors are encouraged by the government through a series of measures to protect the rights of the workers as well as to harness economic activity in the country.

He said the government considers healthy trade union activities as the key to the success of business concerns.

In order to promote and encourage bilateral dialogue within the public sector organizations, the government is gradually lifting restrictions on the trade union activities with a beginning made by allowing trade union activities in Wapda.

He said the government is broadening the social safety nets to protect the contract and daily wages labour through effective implementation mechanism.

He enumerated the various steps taken by the government for providing quality education to workers’ children.
