NOWSHERA, May 6: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed has said that the executive committees of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and JI will decide whether they should contest the forthcoming general elections under the present Election Commission or not.

It was very difficult for them to participate in the elections under the supervision of present Election Commission, he said.

Speaking to various town-level gatherings, he expressed his dismay over the conduct of the present Election Commission and voiced for the constitution of an independent Election Commission to supervize the October elections.

He said the JI and MMA would hold their consultative meetings on May 9 and May 13, respectively, and focus on the formation of an independent Election Commission to stop chances of rigging in October polls.

He said the class-based present educational system had been a source of all evils and held a selective group of western agents responsible for the present state of affairs in the country.

The JI chief said that the farcical referendum had not only exposed the Musharraf government, but also brought a disgrace on the country all over the world. Only three per cent people had cast votes in the so-called referendum, he added.

The Supreme Court, he said, in its verdict declared that the country was passing through a phase of emergency and referendum was not being held under the Constitution. “We think the Supreme Court has not given its verdict on our petition,” he added.

Our Mingora correspondent adds : The central general secretary of Jamaat-i- Islami, Syed Munawar Hassan, has said

that the executive body of JI will meet on May 9 (Thursday) to decide on the future action to be taken against the government.

He said both JI and ARD were preparing to publish a white paper against the Musharraf government.

Addressing a meeting of the JI members here on Monday, Munawar Hassan criticized the government and demanded early resignation of the president General Pervez Musharraf and chief election commissioner.

He said the referendum has exposed the true intentions of the government, as the percentage shown in the referendum results was a fraud.

The JI leader said the majority of people were opposed to the president, but the state media was busy gibing wrong and baseless figures regarding the referendum. He also came hard on the chief election commissioner saying that he was no fit for the post.

The JI leader said the president was following Zionist policies and no good could be expected from him. He proposed that the chief election commissioner should be replaced before the forthcoming national elections.

Haji Khaliqdad Khan, former MNA and Maulana Muhammad Munir also spoke on the occasion.
