KARACHI, Oct 24: The City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, has ordered immediate closure of all hydrants operating off Nishtar Road.

In different letters written to the DIG Karachi, KWSB Managing Director and concerned officials of the city government, he asked them to put a ban on the operation of hydrants situated off Nishtar Road, as tankers drawing water from them had not only devastated the road but were also creating hindrance in the smooth flow of traffic, besides causing accidents.

Through the letters, these officials have been requested to implement the decision with immediate effect as the road’s reconstruction has already begun. A compliance report was also demanded by the City Nazim.

It may be pointed out that the 24-hour movement of tankers drawing water from these hydrants has not only rendered Nishtar Road un-motorable, but has also created deep potholes and craters on both main Jehangir Road and Martin Road that leads to PIB Colony from the Teen Hatti traffic intersection.

Rash and negligent driving on part of tanker drivers has not only caused fatal accidents but tankers’ movement in the form of a convoy are also a major source of traffic congestion on these busy and narrow main thoroughfares.

CNG: To save on energy cost, the City Government has decided to install CNG kits in all its vehicles.

City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has issued a directive to the City Government’s works department asking its officials concerned to activate its inspection and control cell, ensure early implementation of the decision of converting the City Government’s vehicles into CNG system as it would help save millions of rupees the government was incurring under the head of petrol purchase annually.

City Government sources said that though, at present, the CNG kits would be installed in the vehicles of the city government’s existing departments, the decision would be applicable to the vehicles of the KWSB, KDA, MDA, LDA once these organizations were fully merged into the city government.

Concerned citizens have lauded the move saying it would not only save millions of rupees of the city government but would also help reduce the rising level of pollution in the city.

They demanded that the Sindh government not only get installed CNG kits in the vehicles of all its departments but also make it mandatory for public transport to install CNG kits as such a move, on the one hand, would bring down the level of pollution in the city and, on the other, stabilize transport fares which were off and on enhanced whenever there was an increase in petrol prices.
