HYDERABAD, June 20: A shortfall of 285 megawatts is taking place in Jamshoro Thermal Power House although the authorities succeeded in synchronising one of the four units on Friday evening — Chinese unit-3 — which had developed a fault in its turbine and has been repaired.

Currently only unit-3 and unit-4 were working while Japanese unit-1 and Chinese unit-2 were not working for some major repairs and overhauling, causing a deficit of 285 megawatts of electricity as they were generating 125 megawatts and 160 megawatts respectively.

Currently unit-4 is generating 140 megawatts of electricity.

Power house sources said that air free heater of unit-1 needs major repair and cleaning and it is likely to be run in the evening on June 23 as work is continuously going-on. “Its really a very difficult job given the fact that the structure is so huge and machinery so heavy that requires workers to take all kind of precautions”, said the source.

The officials are required to maintain purity of hydrogen gas and water, he added.

As far as unit-2 is concerned that had gone out of order on May 10, would take at least two and half month as correspondence with representatives of Chinese firm, which had commissioned the project are under way.

“At least two Chinese officials will be required to examine the machine as only they could understand it because it is their product”, said another source.

The correspondence made by power house authorities had been responded to positively for obtaining some parts.

Sources further said that shutdown of unit-4 is already due from July 15 while Japanese unit-1 needs major overhauling for which a shutdown of 90 days has been sought.

“Japanese consultants have demanded Rs130 million for overhauling and repair for the unit and negotiations are under way,” said the source.

Two units of Jamshoro thermal power house stopped functioning on Thursday due to some operational faults.

The power house was commissioned in 1990-91 and it now needed capacity improvement.

It contributes around 600 megawatts of electricity to national supply.
