JHANG, March 12: Four policemen, including an inspector, and three students were injured in a scuffle when a police contingent tried to block a students’ demonstration against derogatory caricatures published by the Danish media, in Khokha Chowk in Satellite Town here on Monday

A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) misbehaved with a college lecturer, which infuriated the students who resorted to pelting stones on the police party, leaving seven people from both sides injured.

The students of Government College of Commerce took out a demonstration to condemn the blasphemous sketches republished by the Danish media. Students of a private college, Faraan College, later joined the students of Commerce College.

A police contingent led by DSP Ghulam Mustafa intercepted the rally leading to an argument between the demonstrators and the police. During the course of arguments, the DSP allegedly slapped Faraan College’s lecturer Abdul Sattar but the act abruptly ignited fury among students and they resorted to pelting stones leaving Inspector Mushtaq Ahmed and constables Qadir, Humayun and Nawaz injured. Three students also sustained injuries in the ensuing retaliation by the police.

The DSP later extended an apology to the lecturer to pacify the demonstrators. However, Faraan College’s principal, Hafiz Abdul Jabbar, told reporters that they would initiate legal proceedings against the police personnel involved in the incident. No case, however, has been registered against anyone in this connection.
