LARKANA, Feb 20: The chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party-Shaheed Bhutto Ghinwa Bhutto sounded bitterly satirical when she vented her reaction to polls results, saying “we congratulate winning tyrants as a peasant congratulates a landlord and a labourer applauds an industrialist.”
Ghinwa, flanked by Fatima Bhutto, said at a press conference at Al-Murtaza House on Wednesday that “We are happy that general elections have been held in Pakistan but we mourn the innocent people who lost their precious lives during the run-up to election”.
Despite the fact that no big political party had pointed out irregularities in election process the polls were not entirely free and fair for those who did not have muscle power and adequate financial resources, she said.
The election turned out to be a fight between the ruling elites, in which the poor peasants, labourers, clerks, teachers and members of lower middle class had no say, the poor were forced to choose between tyrants, she observed.
She alleged that rigging was committing in election but instead of going to court her party would go to people. She would make efforts to bring back into the fold all the estranged party leaders.
She said that she “does not expect any change in the condition of the poor and downtrodden people of Pakistan after the elections. They will continue to be exploited and oppressed whereas the rich will continue to become richer, the poor poorer and Pakistan weaker.”
The talks between PPP-SB and Sindh National Front that had come to a halt due to elections would be resumed for developing understanding between the two parties, she said.
She called for major amendments to election laws offering equal opportunities to the poor, women and minorities and said her party was determined to continue its struggle in the villages.
