QUETTA, Feb 4: Ali Ahmed Kurd, one of the leaders of the lawyers’ struggle for restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary, was placed under house arrest on Monday, only a few days after his release from nearly three months of detention.

Mr Kurd, a member of the Pakistan Bar Council, was served with the detention order when he reached Quetta airport in the morning to board a flight for Lahore.

“The police first tried to forcibly stop me from boarding the flight. But when I resisted and challenged them that no one could stop me they brought a detention order for 30 days. This detention is illegal and unlawful,” Mr Kurd said.

He described his detention as a cowardly act and vowed to continue the struggle for the restoration of the pre-Nov 3 judiciary and constitutional rule in the country.

The firebrand speaker said he was going to Lahore to lead a lawyers’ rally on Feb 7 and to participate in a public meeting to be organised by the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

Mr Kurd said the government had released him on Friday after 86 days of detention but had again detained him which proved that rulers were scared of the lawyers’ movement. He emphasised that lawyers were in the forefront of the political struggle for the restoration of judiciary and would not easily give up their campaign.
