Candyland win Bridge championship

KARACHI, Jan 7: Candyland chalked up five straight wins in a row to grab the Swiss Movement bridge championship at the Aslam Bridge Hall on Sunday.

Candyland, enjoying the services of Mohammad Ismail, Ziaullah Baig, Hasan Askari, Hamed Mohiuddin, Mubashir Puri and Khalid Mohiuddin, accumulated 90 victory points (VPs) to lead the 12-team competition.

The winners defeated Rizwan 25-5, Suri 16-14, Nords 18-12 and Rais 16-14.

Nords occupied second berth with score of 87 VPs.

They won three matches –- 25-5 from Farhat, 20-10 from Suri and 16-14 from Rais –- and lost two –- 12-18 to Candyland and 14-16 to Alliance.

Rais also collected 87 VPs for third spot since they had lost to Nords in the third round.

Saleem Ahmed, Mohsin Chandna, Rais Ahmed and Jamal Nizami represented Rais-IV.

In the 16-pair Mitchel Movement Pair contest, A. K. Bhurgri-Asghar Naqvi outpaced all the competitors from the North-South direction by scoring 62.84 per cent.

Dr Sarfraz-S.M. Ozair scored 57.63 per cent and Azwarul Haque-Wajahat Suri 54.68 per cent for second and third places.

From the East-West direction, Hamed Mohiuddin-Ziaullah Baig won the top position with 58.62 per cent score.

Anwer Gheewala-Anwer Kizilbash finished second and Ghulam Muhammed-Jamal Nizami claimed third position with scores of 57.64 per cent and 57.15 per cent respectively.
