THATTA, Dec 9: Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh Justice (Retd) Abdul Qadir Halepoto said on Sunday that his government would not allow rigging in elections and would ensure that maximum number of people used their right of franchise in a peaceful atmosphere.
The chief minister said at a seminar on “Makhdoom Mohammad Hashim Thattvi” at Circuit House that it was the first and foremost duty of caretaker government to maintain law and order during elections.
He said that the caretaker government planned to undertake some good works and hoped that the coming government would implement the schemes approved by the caretaker set-up.
He regretted that Thatta, an historical city of Sindh, which was once called the city of knowledge, had no university today and announced constitution of a committee tasked with recommending proposals for setting up a university in the district.
He said that Sindh was fortunate in the sense that the first translation of the holy book was made here by the great scholar Makhdoom Mohammad Hashim Thattvi.
He called him a friend of Sindh, who wrote hundreds of books reflecting Sindhi culture and civilisation of his period and called upon researchers to find out unpublished work of Makhdoom Thattvi so that it could be published.
Prominent academician Syed Qalandar Shah Lakiyari said that Makhdoom Thattvi had made a huge contribution to Sindhi literature but the common man was not aware of his services due to lack of proper guidance.
Prof Ashraf Samoon said that arrangements should be made to publish some 300 writings of Makhdoom Hashim, written in Sindhi and Arabic, which still remained unpublished.
Earlier, Sindh Agriculture Minister Syed Aijaz Ali Shah Shirazi and District Nazim Syed Shafqat Hussain Shah Shirazi complained to the caretaker chief minister at a meeting at the Circuit House that sugarcane rate in the district was very low, causing huge losses to growers. Besides, the affectees of RBOD project were not getting compensation on time, they added.
The chief minister assured that the RBOD affectees would get compensation on time and added that the growers’ problems would be referred to the federal government.
He also announced Rs0.5 million as grant for Al-Shafa Qadir Bux Bhutto Trust.
Accident: Two men suffered serious wounds and later died on way to hospital after their motorcycles collided head-on near here on the National Highway on Sunday.
