KARACHI, Nov 12: Sewerage system in various parts of the old city collapsed once again on Monday creating unhygienic conditions in lanes and streets of Urdu Bazaar, Mohammad Bin Qasim Road, Ratan Taloa, Mithadar, Kharadar, Baghdadi, Lea Market, D D Chaudhry Road, Ramswami, Ranchor Line, Bhimpura, Haqqani Chowk and several arteries of Bohri Bazaar.

Stagnant sewage has been causing damage to the roads and creating foul smell in the areas. Besides, people were facing great hardship in walking or driving through the localities. Traffic movement at different sections of M. A. Jinnah Road, particularly near Radio Pakistan Building, Tibet Centre, Plaza, Saeed Manzil, Motandas Market, Abdullah Haroon Road, Zaibunnisa Market, Preedy Street and Shahrah-i-Iraq and Light House was disrupted due to the pools of filthy water.

Some of the affected residents said that overflowing gutters had been a recurring feature this year because the sewage system laid 50 years back was no more strong enough to bear the load of the growing population.

Sources in the KWSB said that most of these lines would have to be replaced.

Residents of the affected localities have urged the authorities concerned to take immediate corrective measures to replace the sewers and ensure restoration of clean and healthy environment.
